Man killed in drunken brawl

A 36-YEAR-OLD man from Bikita in Masvingo was reportedly killed by a fellow reveller at a beer drink while trying to save his brother during a brawl, police said yesterday. Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Sunday at about 9pm.
He identified the man as Felix Bungari of Muchinge Village under Chief Mazungunye.
He said the suspect is on the run and police are looking for him.

Insp Zhanero said Bungari was drinking traditional beer in the company of other villagers at Mugombwi Village when he met his death.
“Bungari was drinking traditional brew at Imbayarwo Mugombwi (40)’s homestead. He was drinking with Mugombwi,” he said.

Insp Zhanero said while they were drinking, Mugombwi approached his wife and demanded money.
“Mugombwi went to his wife, Ms Rumbidzai Donga who was selling the traditional brew and demanded some money. Mr Morgan Bungari, brother to Felix, reprimanded Mugombwi for demanding money from his wife. He advised Mugombwi against taking the money since he would misuse it,” he said.

“Mugombwi got angry and started attacking Morgan accusing him of intervening in his domestic affairs. He slapped him. After seeing that his brother was being attacked, Felix joined in the fight and kicked Mugombwi in the stomach,” said Insp Zhanero.

He said Mugombwi turned to Felix and the two started fighting but the latter was overpowered.
“Felix was beaten and fell headlong. He sustained serious body and facial injuries in the process. He regained composure and tried to wake up but collapsed and died. He could have died from the injuries,” said Insp Zhanero.

He said Mugombwi immediately disappeared after realising that his victim had died.
Insp Zhanero has appealed to members of the public not to use violence to resolve disputes.
“People should learn to resolve their disputes amicably and not resort to violence,” he said.
