Man killed in quarrel over box of matches

Confirming the incident yesterday, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said the incident occurred at about 9.30pm on Sunday.
“We are investigating a murder case that occurred at Dumeya Bottle Store in Nkayi. Ndlovu, who is from Levy Ndlovu’s homestead under Chief Sikhobokhobo, and the deceased, Sibanda, from Mangqutshu Village in Mkhalathi area, were drinking with other patrons when the tragic incident occurred,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
“The bar lady, Ms Sikhohlisiwe Sibanda (23), told the patrons that she wanted to close the bottle store but Ndlovu insisted that he would not leave unless she sold him a box of matches.”

Asst Insp Makonese said the bar lady refused to sell Ndlovu the box of matches and he started insulting her.
“Ndlovu insulted the lady and threatened to assault her for refusing to sell him a box of matches but the lady insisted that it was impossible as she wanted to close the shop.
“Sibanda tried to bring peace between the two and this angered Ndlovu who drew a knife and stabbed Sibanda once on the chest before he fled from the scene,” said Asst Insp Makonese.

She said a fellow imbiber attended to Sibanda but he died before he was taken to hospital.
“Sibanda died in the bottle store and a report was made to the police, who attended to the scene and took the body to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for a post-mortem.
“Ndlovu was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She urged members of the public to engage third parties whenever they had problems and avoid moving around with dangerous objects that could cause unnecessary loss of lives.
