Police in Gweru have arrested a local man on murder charges after he, together with his friend, allegedly fatally assaulted his brother-in-law over outstanding lobola money.

According to sources, Innocent Sibanda had a long standing dispute with Mr Prosper Mangisi’s family over lobola.

Sibanda is said to have later teamed up with a friend, Montrose Ncube, and assaulted Mr Mangisi with logs and a knobkerrie leading to his death.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident which occurred last Friday at Winery Compound in Gweru.

He said Sibanda was now in police custody, but Ncube was still on the run.

“We appeal for information on the whereabouts of Sibanda’s accomplice, Ncube,” said Insp Mahoko. “As police we once again advise members of the public to avoid harbouring disputes for long periods of time. They should seek mediation and restore peace in time.”
