A BINGA man recently shocked the courts when he claimed that he axed his brother’s cattle as vengeance for bewitching his son resulting in a strange illness. Wilson Mwende (42) of Kariangwe in Binga pleaded guilty when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu facing charges of causing malicious damage to property. He was remanded in custody after the way he answered questions prompted the magistrate to have him undergo psychiatric evaluation to assess the state of his mind.
According to the State led by Mr Bruce Maphosa, on 8 August Wilson went to his brother Siachibelo’s homestead and did not find him.
When Siachibelo’s wife told him that her husband was not at home, he started accusing him of bewitching his son.
He proceeded to the pen housing his brother’s five cattle before striking four of them dead and injuring one with an axe.
Siachibelo’s wife reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
When asked why he did it, Wilson said his brother had bewitched his child and that he was taking vengeance.
“Your Worship, I did what I did after learning that my brother was responsible for causing my child’s unexplained illness. I was simply taking vengeance for my brother’s actions that involve bewitching,” said Wilson, to the amazement of the court.
The trial continues on 3 September.
