A MASVINGO man from Chief Chikwanda area allegedly fatally assaulted his father following a dispute over a bicycle that had been stolen while under his custody.
High Court Judge Justice Francis Bere last week heard how Jonas Tafirenyika, 40, of Mazarira Village picked a farm brick before striking Taurai Benjamin Tafirenyika, 69, on the back of his head.
Justice Bere on circuit in Masvingo ordered that Tafirenyika be examined by two doctors after he pleaded not guilty to murder.
“The court has recommended that the accused be examined by two doctors to ascertain his mental state,” said Justice Bere.
Prosecutors say on February 27, 2013 just before dawn, Jonas left home for Mazare Business Centre en route to Masvingo City using his father’s bicycle.
In the evening of the same day, Jonas returned home but without the bicycle and claimed that it had been stolen from the banks of a river where he had hidden it before proceeding to Masvingo.
“Taurai was not satisfied by Jonas’ explanation and ordered him to accompany him back to the alleged river to search for the bicycle,” said Elson Chavarika for the state.
Jonas refused to go to the river and a misunderstanding ensued resulting in the two fighting.
Jonas struck Taurai with a brick on the back of the head resulting in him sustaining serious injuries. He died later from injuries sustained, the court heard.
