A 39-year-old man from Mvuma has been arrested after allegedly luring his wife into the bush and killing her on Sunday night for ritual purposes after being promised US$5 000 by an as yet unknown person or group of people.
The suspect, Rameck Batsirai, who was employed as a security guard at a service station in Mvuma, is said to have panicked together with his two co-accused, and abandoned the body and one-year-old baby at the scene after a passerby reacted to the baby’s screams.
It is understood that the baby screamed uncontrollably when Batsirai and his co-accused allegedly started extracting the tongue and breast from the body of his wife, Regina Khumbula.
Batsirai stays in the Mushayavhudzi suburb, Mvuma.
Police in Mvuma say Batsirai and two other suspects, are now assisting with investigations while the one-year-old baby boy, named after him, has been taken to Mvuma District Hospital.
Batsirai has since implicated two more suspects, one Innocent Muneri (39) and Tongai Hotera (37) whom he said helped him kill his wife for her tongue and some body parts meant for rituals.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the three arrests.
“We have since arrested the husband and two other suspects that he implicated in the ritual murder,” he said.
