A HWANGE man on Thursday ran amok and savagely butchered his wife with an axe in front of their children following a yet to be ascertained argument. Lyton Muleya of Kasibo, Hwange, allegedly attacked his wife Loiusa Mita with an axe on the back and the head after he was allegedly irked that she had opted to sleep with their children following the argument.

Although Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese could not be reached for comment, some police officers and said the suspect was on the run.
Sources told Sunday News that the couple had on Thursday night retired to bed after an argument over an unknown issue resulting in the deceased sleeping with her two daughters, Petronella Takawira and Getrude Muleya in the bedroom.

“Muleya followed her to his daughters’ bedroom where he assaulted her with fists and open hands. Mita fled towards her parents’ homestead which is 100 metres away. Muleya who was in hot pursuit caught up with her and struck her with an axe on her back and then on the face resulting in her left eye being severed,” said a source privy to the incident.

Mita is understood to have stood up and dragged herself towards her parents homestead but was tripped by Muleya who again struck her on the back and on the hand which was severed as she tried to block the attacks. He then fled the scene after committing the heinous crime.

Some villagers together with the deceased’s mother who had heard the screams arrived at the scene as Mita breathed her last while lying in a pool of blood. The body was taken to Victoria Falls hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

The murder came barely a week after a Dete woman was stabbed to death over a WhatsApp message.
