A HARARE businessman allegedly lost US$46 000 to a bogus car dealer who promised to order a Toyota Prado on his behalf in Japan.
The suspect, Benedict Makore, appeared in court over the weekend charged with fraud.
The court heard that on June 18 last year, Douglas Richard Stewart Beattie contacted Makore to help him buy a 2019 Toyota Prado.
It is the State’s case that Makore assured Beattie that he could act as an agent and procure the vehicle from Japan at a cost of US$46 500 and that the vehicle would arrive within two to three months from the date of payment.
On July 19, Beattie allegedly paid US$32 500 as part payment for the car in the presence of his fiancée, Jennifer Bristow.
Makore signed for the payment as acknowledgement of the funds.
On August 4, Beattie made an additional payment of US$14 000 to Makore, and a Proof of Payment was signed by both parties.
After three months had lapsed, Beattie made follow-ups on the car but Makore gave excuses and never delivered the vehicle.
According to Beattie, Makore became evasive prompting him to file a police report.
Beattie lost US$46 500 and nothing was recovered.
