A jealous 29-year-old Gweru man who could not stomach seeing his ex-wife in the hands of his best friend allegedly threw a knife at her.
Innocent Gwenzi of Mkoba 12 in Gweru appeared before Gweru Magistrate Musaiwona Shotgame facing an assault charge. He was remanded out of custody to May 11 for sentencing.
Gwenzi pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He told the court that he was still married to Rosemary Nyoni contrary to her claims that they were no longer together.
“Your worship she’s lying that I threw a knife at her, she’s my wife, we haven’t separated. Even if you call my parents who are in the rural areas right now, they can confirm that we’re still together, only that we’re in the habit of divorcing and reconciling, but by the time l saw her with my friend we had reconciled. She hurt my feelings considering that, Pedzisai whom she was with, is my best friend,” said Gwenzi.
However, Nyoni said they had separated and she had a right to move on.
“Your worship we separated months back and l don’t think there’s a problem in moving on with his best friend,” said Nyoni.
Prosecuting Ernest Muzembi said last Friday at around 6PM at a flea market in Gweru, Gwenzi approached Nyoni at her work place and accused her of being in love with another man.
“A misunderstanding arose and Pedzisai, Nyoni’s boyfriend who is a friend to the accused arrived to pick Nyoni to go home. This didn’t go down well with Gwenzi who took a knife from his back pocket and hurled it at Nyoni. Fortunately Nyoni ducked and the knife fell on the ground,” said Muzembi.
