A MARONDERA man has been arrested for allegedly axing his wife and two-month-old baby following a dispute over US$1 800. Mashonaland East Assistant provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the arrest of Caleb Bonyogwe (29) of Rusike Circle in Nyameni last week.He is set to appear in court facing murder charges.
It is alleged that on January 9, Bonyongwe, his wife Choice Mashonganyika (35) and their baby went to Avon Cliff Farm to work in a tobacco field.
The two were later seen leaving the farm with Mashonganyika carrying their baby on her back. Bonyongwe was holding an axe. This was the last time the family was seen together.
On January 11, Bonyongwe informed his relatives that Mashonganyika and their son had died after drinking poison.
The following day Mashonganyika’s relatives searched for her body at Marondera Provincial Hospital mortuary without success and made a missing person report to the police.
Later that day Marondera police received a call from Bonyongwe’s father based in Nyanga informing them Bonyongwe had confessed killing his wife and child. He left the bodies in the bush at Avon Cliff Farm.
Police discovered the bodies in a moderate state of decomposition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Bonyongwe and Mashonganyika had a long-standing dispute over US$1 800 that the man had given to his wife.
Detectives arrested Bonyongwe in Rusape.
