A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Woodville suburb in Bulawayo has been nabbed for setting ablaze 20 hectares of grazing land.
Sipho Lunga admitted to starting the fire stating that he was trying to burn some bushes.
Circumstances are that on 15 August 2024 at around 12pm, the victim received a call from his employee informing him that there was a fire that they were failing to contain.
He indicated that this fire had been started by Lunga from a neighboring plot. Upon arrival at his plot, he discovered that about 20 hectares of grazing land had been burnt. The matter was reported to the police leading to Lunga’s arrest.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and urged the public to desist from negligence.
“We received a case of a fire which occurred at a plot in Woodville, where about 20 hectares of grazing land was burnt and 40 hectares of grazing land from a neighboring plot where the fire started was also burnt. The police are urging the public to desist from negligently or carelessly starting uncontrolled veld fires as there can be a serious threat causing damage to property, ecosystem and endangering lives,” he said.
