CHALTON MUKONO of Harare has been ordered to pay US$60 monthly maintenance for his three minor children, starting from August 30.
His ex-partner, Ms Grace Chimunda, appeared before Harare Civil Court magistrate Ms Faina Makumbe, alleging that Mukono has not been supporting their children.
“He does not even know what they eat, wear, or which school they go to,” she stated.
Ms Chimunda explained that Mukono, a farmer, earns US$60 weekly from selling vegetables at the market.
She argued that Mukono has no other children to support, suggesting he can afford to care for his own.
“His failure to take care of his children is by choice, not due to financial problems. With his earnings, he can surely provide for them,” she added.
Ms Chimunda requested US$300 to cover school fees, food and rent for the children.
Mukono contested this claim, stating he could only afford US$30 per month due to instability in his business.
“My vegetables were stolen, and I owe people money. I am struggling to pay them back. Right now, I’m making US$3 per week from piece jobs,” he explained.
He also mentioned that Chimunda transferred their children to a private school without his consent.
“I asked her why she transferred the children, and she said she could afford it. I am surprised she’s in court claiming I refused to pay school fees.
“If she enrols them at a school that I can afford, I will gladly pay,” he said.
Magistrate Makumbe ordered Mukono to pay US$60 per month for maintenance until the children are self-sufficient or reach 18 years of age.
Ms Chimunda was advised to seek an increase in the maintenance amount if Mukono’s earnings improve.
