A MANAGER with a Harare company has been paying $261 a month as maintenance for another man’s child for the past eight months.
The Maintenance Court in Bulawayo on Friday cancelled the maintenance order after two paternity tests confirmed that the manager, Mr Ngqabutho Moyo, is not the father of his former wife’s child.
Mr Moyo was once customarily married to Ms Audrey Tanya Asani but the couple separated sometime in 2008. Ms Asani then sued Mr Moyo for the maintenance of the child and the Maintenance Court ordered Mr Moyo to pay $261 a month for the child’s upkeep which covered groceries, school fees and other expenses.
The child, a boy, was born on 16 September 2009. Mr Moyo, in his affidavit told the court that the child was not his because Ms Asani fell pregnant a year after they separated.
He then requested to have paternity tests which were done in 2010 which confirmed he was not the child’s father. Ms Asani challenged the results saying they were not conclusive and reliable as she maintained that Mr Moyo was the father of her son.
Mr Moyo had to pay for another paternity test which was done in South Africa. He however continued to pay maintenance money while awaiting the results of the second test.
After the results of second test confirmed again that Mr Moyo was not the father of the child, the Maintenance Court then cancelled the maintenance order.
