A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Guyu area in Gwanda District allegedly picked an iron bar and pounded his grandmother resulting in her death.
The incident happened on Friday last week.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said Bekithemba Ndlovu of Philos Ncube’s homestead under Chief Mathe allegedly killed his grandmother, Kabelo Mdlongwa (60) using an iron bar.
Ndlovu had earlier been found at his home by his uncle Tumelo Mdlongwa (27), assaulting Kabelo with the iron bar and even threatened to do the same to Tumelo who at one time tried to stop him from assaulting his grandmother.
“On 1 November at about 1pm, Tumelo who is a son to the now deceased Kabelo, came home from the grazing land where he had gone to look for his donkeys. He found Ndlovu striking Kabelo with an iron bar while she lay on the ground at their homestead,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
On seeing his mother being assaulted by Ndlovu, Tumelo tried to save her but failed.
Sensing danger he ran for dear life leaving his mother at the mercy of Ndlovu.
“Tumelo had shouted at Ndlovu asking him what he was doing and that is when Ndlovu charged towards him. Tumelo ran away,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
He said Tumelo returned to the scene about 30 minutes later in the company of another villager, Mr Thulani Ncube.
“When Tumelo returned home, he found his mother lying in a pool of blood. She was already dead and Ndlovu was still at the homestead,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
He said Mr Ncube quickly apprehended Ndlovu and took him to Kafusi Police Base where a report was made.
The body of Kabelo was conveyed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said Ndlovu was facing a murder charge.
He advised members of the public not to resort to violence but resolve issues amicably and seek the intervention of third parties if there is a need.
