A LUPANE man has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing an 89-year-old woman.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Chiratidzo Dube confirmed the incident which occurred in the Maphisa area on 16 December.
She said Ndabezinhle Ndlovu (33) allegedly attacked Annie Dube (89) before leaving her body lying in a nearby bush.
“On 16 December at around 2pm Ms Liznet Sibanda who was staying with the now deceased went out leaving Annie Dube alone,” said Insp Dube.
She said trouble was discovered later that night when Sibanda returned home.
“Upon her return at around 9PM on the same day, Sibanda found that Dube was not at home and she conducted a search in a bid to locate her but to no avail,” she said.
The search continued into the early hours of the following day.
“On 17 December 2025 at around 2AM Ms Sibanda then mobilised her neighbours and conducted a search around the compound,” said Insp Dube.
The neighbours made a gruesome discovery in a nearby bush.
“They located Dube’s body lying lifeless, half naked, with bruises on the left cheek, about 150 metres away from the compound in a nearby bush,” she said.
“The matter was reported to the police and scene was attended by ZRP Maphisa and CID who made investigations leading to the arrest of the suspect who is assisting police with investigations.”
Police said investigations are continuing and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
