VILLAGERS in Matetsa, Mutoko, claim the spirit of an elderly woman, who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in 2014, is haunting her family and demanding compensation in the form of 13 cows.
Susan Madhuku Chomusina was 72 when she died under horrific circumstances.
The main suspect is her husband’s younger brother’s son, Simon Chomusina, now aged 59, who police say is wanted for murder.
Simon is said to have gang-raped the elderly woman, with three other people.
Mashonaland Central police spokesperson, Inspector Milton Mundembe, confirmed that Simon is still on the run. At the time of the incident, the family lived at Plot Number 346 in Matetsa. According to her son, Ephraim Chomusina, the family initially wanted to report the matter to police or the traditional leadership.
However, her maternal uncle allegedly blocked the report after being promised three cows by the suspect. The cows were never delivered and the case was buried along with the elderly woman. Years later, her spirit has allegedly returned, according to the villagers.
It is said to be appearing to the granny’s granddaughter, Josephine Chomusina, demanding 13 cows as compensation.
“My mother’s spirit is tormenting my daughter. It says it wants to be paid with 13 cows by the person who killed her.
“That person also admitted he did it with others. We met him and he confirmed,” said Ephraim.
Josephine says her body is constantly in pain and she believes the spirit will not stop until the compensation is delivered.
“This spirit is tormenting me day and night. I want the family to come together so that this cow issue is resolved,” she said.
Another relative, Laiza Chomusina, confirmed that the spirit is active and demanding justice.
“My mother wants her cows. The issue was hidden and ignored. Now the spirit is back for correction,” she said.
Even the uncle accused of blocking the case, Rangarirai Muranga, has admitted the he is being tormented.
“It is true the spirit has appeared. I was promised a cow to keep the matter quiet. That promise was a lie.
“I am now working with the grandchildren to seek justice,” he said.
