Man rapes mentally challenged niece

The man (name withheld to protect the woman) is from Sitezi area, west of Gwanda town. He was arrested on 22 October after the woman’s pregnancy started showing.
The two were staying together at the man’s homestead and he allegedly took advantage of the woman, who is in her 20s.

The man was arraigned before Gwanda magistrate Ms Gladmore Mushove to answer to a charge of rape.
He has been appearing for routine remand and was on Wednesday further remanded in custody to 16 January where he would start appearing at the Gwanda regional court.

The State would seek to prove that between 2 January and 11 April this year, the man had sex with the mentally challenged woman on several occasions.
The woman ended up falling pregnant but the man allegedly continued raping her.

A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
The man told the court the police assaulted him and the magistrate instructed the State to investigate.
