A GROUP of whistleblowers helped the police arrest a man who allegedly raped his seven-year-old niece in a garden and then gave her some vegetables to try and buy her silence.
He threatened her should she ever reveal the rape to anyone.
Mashonaland East police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii said the case happened last month.
“Sometime in August this year, at around 0900 hours, the accused person (name withheld to protect the minor), who is the complainant’s uncle, asked her to accompany him to the garden to get some vegetables where he raped her.
“After the act, he instructed the complainant not to reveal the matter to anyone and he gave her vegetables and told her to go back home.”
The accused person is 42.
Insp Chazovachii said the matter came to light last week after ZRP Murehwa received an anonymous tip-off that the accused person had sexually abused the complainant.
“The police swiftly reacted and went to the scene. The complainant was interviewed and she revealed the matter.
“The complainant was referred to Murehwa hospital for medical examinations,” he said.
Insp Chazovachii hailed community members who are always alerting the police whenever crimes are committed.
