A 32-YEAR-OLD Plumtree man has been slapped with a six month jail term for robbing his 96-year-old grandmother of cash and property worth $170.Prosper Moyo broke into Nsiwa Ndlovu’s house while she was asleep.

He ordered the complainant to surrender all the money she had. Moyo stole $120 and two blankets from his grandmother and fled.
He was sentenced to six months imprisonment of which three months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not within the period commit an offence of a similar nature.

Passing his sentence, Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa lashed out at Moyo for being a heartless man.

“Out of all people how could you rob such an old woman and to make matters worse she is your grandmother. What do you expect her to do, find a job in order to compensate the money and the blankets that you stole from her?

“You should be ashamed because you have proved to be a heartless man who has no respect for the elderly. In addition you are not appreciative because you stole from the lady who raised you. In her frail state you are expected to be providing for her and protecting her and not stealing from her,” said Ruvetsa.

The complainant who almost broke down in tears as she narrated how her grandson stole from her insisted that she wanted her blankets back.

Prosecuting, Medica Tshuma said Moyo broke into his grandmother’s house on March 7 about 9pm.

“On 7 March Moyo used a spare key which he stole to enter into his grandmother’s house. He found her asleep in her bedroom and ordered her to handover all her money. He stole $120 in cash and two blankets and fled the house.

“The complainant alerted her granddaughter who lives in the neighbourhood. A report was made leading to Moyo’s arrest,” said Tshuma.
