A 24-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for robbing a city woman of R20. Tawanda Madzimure from Cowdray Park suburb appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Tancy Dube yesterday charged with robbery. He told the court he committed the crime in order to raise money to pay hospital bills.
“I admit that I committed the crime and I apologise for that. I wanted to pay hospital bills using the money that I had robbed only to find out there was only R20. I have no one to help me pay the debts I have so I thought it was the easiest way out,” said Madzimure.
Dube sentenced him to 15 months in prison and conditionally suspended three months for five years.
Prosecutor Kingstone Mukanganwi said on July 29 at around 9PM near Tategulu Primary School, Madzimure robbed the complainant of all her valuables on her way home.
“Madzimure robbed Sarah Huchu on her way home. He took all her valuables and disappeared into the dark leaving her on the ground,” he said.
Huchu was on her way home when Madzimure followed her and closed her mouth before dragging her to the ground and threatening her.
Madzimure then grabbed Huchu’s handbag which contained a Nokia C3 phone and R20.
The value of the stolen property was $86 and goods worth $84 were recovered.
