The Bulawayo provincial war veterans association is appealing for building materials to complete the construction of adminstration offices at its stand in Entumbane suburb. Speaking after receiving 50 bags of cement donated by the Nigerian Community Bulawayo chapter yesterday, the province’s secretary general Cde Cephas Ncube said lack of funding had stalled the construction of the administration block.
“The offices are supposed to accommodate the association’s different departments that provide services to members and their dependants,” said Cde Ncube.
He said all issues to do with war veterans, their widows, ex-detainees, omjibha/chimbwidos should be dealt with at the offices.
Cde Ncube said there were also plans to build a conference centre at the same stand.
He appealed to companies and individuals to donate building materials such as bricks, cement, burglar bars, plumbing and electrical fittings.
Cde Ncube said war veterans were contributing money from the little they were being paid by government monthly towards the construction of the offices.
He expressed gratitude to the Nigerians for their contribution saying the cordial relationship between Zimbabwe and Nigeria dates back to the days of the armed struggle.
“During the armed struggle we got a lot of moral and logistical support from the Nigerian people,” said Cde Ncube.
The Nigerian Community Bulawayo chapter chairperson Innocent Onovo said after being approached by the war veterans they felt touched by their plight and decided to contribute in their own small way.
“We believe this is our second home and we’re grateful for the hospitality extended to us,” he said.
Onovo said they were enjoying freedom and peace in Zimbabwe and some of them have even married Zimbabweans.
