Man says stepdad must pay maintenance

A FATHER of three has refused to pay maintenance and told the court that his child is no longer his responsibility as his former wife now lives with another man. Wellington Bonde was dragged to court by his estranged wife, Emmaculate Mpofu. Bonde said his son’s stepfather must pay maintenance for his child.

“I do not live with this woman anymore. She lives with another man and I am sure he can take care of the child. I earn $327 a month and I have two other children to take care of. I also take care of my nephew and I rent a one-roomed house for $150,” said Bonde.

He also said Mpofu showed that she had moved on as she is pregnant with another man’s child.
“She is pregnant with this man’s child and I also have a one-year-old baby to take care of. I have moved on with my life and I thought she has moved on too. I do not see a reason to be in court today,”  he said.

Magistrate Marilyn Mutshina blasted Bonde for not taking care of his child.
“So you want another man to take care of your child? This will always be your child regardless of the fact that you and your wife are separated,” said Mutshina.

The magistrate ordered that $60 be garnished monthly from Bonde’s salary to pay for the upkeep of his child.
