A 38-year-old man from Penhalonga has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of raping an eight-year-old girl.
The Mutare Regional Magistrates’ court handed down the sentence following a full trial.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Cosmore Benito raped the Grade 2 pupil on October 25, 2025.
The child was bathing at home when the offender forced his way inside, carried her behind a curtain and raped.
“The victim tried to escape and screamed for help, but the offender pinned her down and raped her.”
He later threatened to kill her if she revealed the abuse. The crime came to light when the victim’s aunt noticed the child struggling to walk.
Upon examination, she discovered signs of sexual assault, prompting the victim to identify Benito as the perpetrator.
He was subsequently arrested and charged.
The NPAZ said the ruling sends a strong message that perpetrators of sexual violence will be prosecuted and held accountable.
“Rape is a serious crime that has life-altering consequences for victims. Paedophiles do not deserve to be roaming around communities,” reads the statement.
