NGONIDZASHE MVURA, an artisanal miner, who was staying at Battlefields Government Farm in Mashonaland West Province, has been jailed for 25 years for the brutal murder of a local teacher, whom he accused of having an affair with his wife.
However, if Mvura fails to reform after the 25-year prison term, he will remain in prison for life.
Mvura was convicted by the Chinhoyi High Court for fatally stabbing James Jim on July 21, 2024.
The two men had boarded the same vehicle at Waverly bus stop, heading to their shared residence in Battlefields.
Mvura attacked Jim with an okapi flick knife upon arrival at Chiname Business Centre.
The blade penetrated 3.4cm, lacerating Jim’s lungs. Jim later succumbed to the injuries.
High Court Judge Justice Cathrine Bachi-Muzawazi found Mvura guilty of murder with actual intent, stating that the attack was driven by jealousy.
She noted that no proof was presented in court to support Mvura’s claims that Jim was romantically involved with his wife.
According to court proceedings, Mvura was sitting at Waverly bus stop with his friends when he saw Jim joining the queue.
He immediately became hostile towards him, prompting his brother Emmanuel Mvura to intervene, describing Jim as a peaceful man who had done nothing to provoke such suspicion.
Despite the warning, Mvura attacked Jim later that day without warning, after they had all travelled together and disembarked at Chiname Business Centre.
Jim had momentarily left to take some of his luggage to a nearby shop and was returning for the remaining laguage when Mvura ambushed him.
After committing the crime, Mvura fled the scene and evaded authorities for over a week. He was eventually arrested on July 29, 2024, in Mutorashanga.
In his defence, Mvura claimed the attack was triggered by ongoing verbal abuse he endure from Jim.
He alleged that the Jim had taunted him about his performance in bed.
However, Justice Bachi-Muzawazi dismissed his version of events, pointing out contradictions between his court testimony and his warned and cautioned statement recorded by the police.
In his statement to police, Mvura had initially identified another man, Funyana, as the one allegedly involved with his wife.
Jim was merely accused of acting as a go-between, relaying messages on behalf of Funyana and not of being the actual adulterer.
Justice Bachi-Muzawazi condemned Mvura’s actions and the conduct of his family, stating:
“His partial defence of provocation has been dismissed as non-existent given that the target of the passionate revenge was not the person who disrupted his marriage.
“Further, that the murderous attack was exacted five months after the accused had been estranged from his so-called wife. In addition, there was no tangible proof of an affair other than suspicious WhatsApp messages, which were not produced to the police nor before the court.”
