Man shot dead in Mvuma gold rush

A 27-year-old artisanal miner from Shurugwi was shot and killed after they clashed with the police following a gold rush in Mvuma at the weekend.

The deceased has been identified as Magama Musoni (27) of Makusha in Shurugwi. Police said Musoni was involved in running battles with the police from the support unit who were clearing illegal gold miners who had invaded a gold claim in Mvuma.

Several other artisanal miners were arrested in the operation. Musoni’s father, Mr Christmas Musoni, confirmed the incident

“I only got the sad news on the day and we went to Mvuma,” he said.

“Thus when we learnt that my son was no more after he was shot by the police at an area where they said he and others were illegally mining gold.”
