A 20-year-old man from Chitungwiza says he stole US$10 and a mobile phone because he wanted to raise money to help his pregnant wife’s preparations for the birth of their baby.
Carlos Makore stole a Samsung A52 and a wallet that had US$10. He appeared at the Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court where he was found guilty of robbery.
He said:
“I wanted to use the money to buy preparation since my wife is pregnant.”
Makore was initially sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with two months suspended on condition that he will not commit a similar offence for five years.
It was proved that on November 8, at around midnight along Denga Road in Zengeza, Carlos and his accomplices, who are still at large, waylaid Ngonodzaishe Choruwa.
His two colleagues held Choruwa while Carlos was taking a Samsung A52 and a wallet that contained US$10.
Carlos was arrested on November 10.
Only the cellphone was recovered.
