A JAMBEZI man is lucky to be alive after his friend struck him several times on the head with a machete before leaving him for dead following a misunderstanding over $2.

Tobias Muchimba (27), of Kamalala Village 3 under Chief Shana in Jambezi, attacked Remegius Nkomazana accusing him of dodging and refusing to pay back the $2 he was owing.

Muchimba was last week sentenced to five years in jail of which three were conditionally suspended after Hwange regional magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga found him guilty of attempted murder.

Muchimba told the court that he took matters into his own hands because Nkomazana was reluctant to pay back his $2.

“Your worship, I have been looking for him for sometime concerning the money he owed me and he seemed to be dodging me.

So when I met him by chance I tried to reason with him that I needed my money back since I had things I wanted to use it for.

‘‘He just took things lightly, I got angry and that is when I struck him with a machete,” said Muchimba.

The court heard that on 25 August, along the road near Mununa Primary School in Jambezi, Muchimba struck Nkomazana several times on the head and both hands using a machete after an argument over $2.

Nkomazana was rushed to Victoria Falls Hospital unconscious following the attack.

He had sustained serious injuries which included a deep cut on the head and right elbow.

A report was made to police leading to Muchimba’s arrest.

Mr Tinomupeyi Mbiza prosecuted.
