Itas me against the world, I have nothing to lose a is what a Lupane man subscribed to when he vowed to wipe out a whole village with cyanide.
His anger stemmed from that he had been sold out by one villager, for allegedly possessing a hedgehog.
Modecai Makoni (32) made the threats when he was last week sentenced to six months imprisonment by Lupane resident magistrate Ndumo Masuku.
His crime was contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act (purchase of live animals and trophies).
Two detectives received a tip-off that Makoni was in possession of two hedgehogs.
They then went to his homestead last week on Tuesday at around 11pm. They got there with a search warrant and in his bedroom hut they recovered one live hedgehog under the bed.
When asked where he got it he failed to give a satisfactory answer and threatened to wipe off the entire village with cyanide for selling him out. He was arrested.
Each hedgehog is valued at $500 each.
One of the hedgehogs was shown in court as exhibit.
a?I bought the hedgehogs from a man who was selling them but I did not take his details. One of the hedgehogs died.a?
Cases of poaching and cattle rustling are on the rise in Lupane. A man from the same area was arrested after he was caught rearing a zebra at his farm last year.
Another was caught skinning a cow in the bush last month.
