A BULAWAYO man chased his wife and two children from home after a Maintenance Court ordered him to pay $50 monthly for the upkeep of his children.Moffat Vengai, who is employed at Monarch Steel, told magistrate Sheunesu Matova he was offended when his wife, Nhlanhlizile Nyathi, dragged him to court on September 4.

Nyathi yesterday dragged Vengai back to court demanding an increase in the maintenance.

Vengai told the court he felt belittled because he interpreted the court case to mean he was not taking care of his family.

He said he then decided to chase them away on the same day he appeared in court, at night.

“Your Worship, it is true that I chased her away from home because I was offended that she dragged me to court when she could have been clear with me,” Vengai said.

“She should have told me the things that she needs rather than tell people that she will take me to court to give her money to buy tomatoes. If there was a problem we would have fixed things together.”

Nyathi dismissed the claims that she was telling people that she was taking her estranged husband to court for her to get money to buy tomatoes.

“I did not tell anyone that I was coming to court. The night after the judgment, he chased us out of the house and has never bothered to ask about his children. The money should be increased because he is no longer taking care of his children,” she said.

“We have not been at peace ever since we started living together. I don’t want to go back to him after what we have been through.”

Magistrate Matova ordered Vengai to pay $74 per month for the upkeep of his children and ordered the estranged couple to go for counselling.
