A 36-YEAR-OLD Bulilima man will spend the next six months in prison for torching his 79-year-old mother’s bedroom in protest over what he alleged was poorly prepared food.

Israel Dube of Ndolwane area torched Eva Dube’s hut while she was away, destroying property worth R10,000.

The old woman was alerted by her grandchildren about the arson attack when she was away and by the time she returned home, her hut had been reduced to ashes.

Dube appeared before Plumtree magistrate Livard Philemon facing malicious damage to property charges.

The magistrate sentenced him to nine months imprisonment but three months were suspended on condition that he does not within the next five years commit a similar offence.

The court had earlier ordered Dube to be examined by two doctors who confirmed that he was mentally stable.

The court heard that Dube’s mother prepared some food for him on January 5, and left for her garden.

She assigned her grandchildren to serve Dube the food but he chased them away complaining that the food was not properly cooked.

Prosecuting, Clemence Shawarira said a few minutes later Dube torched his mother’s bedroom.
