Man up for rape, assault

A 27-year-old man appeared in court last week after he allegedly attempted to rape an unsuspecting woman who was fleeing her violent husband.

Tonderai Sherekete was also facing charges of physical abuse after he used an iron bar to strike his 68-year-old uncle on the forehead when he rebuked him about his drinking habits.

Sherekete denied the allegations when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Ms Bianca Makwande charged with attempted rape and assault.

Ms Makwande remanded him in custody to Thursday this week.

The prosecutor, Mr Tendayi Matsikinyere, opposed bail arguing that Sherekete was facing serious charges and was a threat to society.

Allegations are that on May 23 at around 3am, the woman had a misunderstanding with her husband and proceeded to her sister’s house in Mbare.

The court heard that Sherekete saw the woman leaving her house and followed her.

It is alleged that when the woman realised that she was being followed, she began to run and Sherekete gave chase before grabbing and trying to rape her. The woman screamed and a man came and rescued her, but Sherekete ran away, it is alleged. The court heard that as the woman continued on her journey, Sherekete attacked her a second time and pushed her to the ground trying to remove her clothes.

The woman overpowered Sherekete and ran to the police to report the case.

In the assault case, Sherekete is reported to have arrived home drunk at around 11pm on May 16.

The court heard that Sherekete was rebuked by his uncle, Musafare Sherekete concerning his drinking habits.

He attacked Musafare with an iron bar once on the forehead.

The matter was reported to police, leading to his arrest.
