ZMDC appoints general manager

The Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation has appointed Mr Sydney Simango as its new general manager with effect from June.

He replaces Mr Jerry Ndlovu who was suspended.

Mr Simango holds a BSc. Honours Degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Aston in Birmingham, UK; an MSc. Degree in Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology from Leicester University, UK; Certificate in Management Development Programme from UNISA and a

Certificate in Total Quality Management Programme from the same university.

He started his mining career in 1981 at the Geological Survey Department which is under the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.

Mr Simango has worked for ZIMASCO in Shurugwi; Ashanti Gold Fields, Freda Rebecca Mines in Bindura and Zimbabwe Platinum Mines.

He left Zimplats in 2014.

Prior to his appointment as General Manager of ZMDC, Mr Simango was running a geological and mining consultancy.

He is a professional member of the Geological Society of Zimbabwe; Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Mr Simango has been a member of the Mining Affairs Board since 2012.

He is also a registered natural scientist with the South African Council for National Scientific Professions.

ZMDC was established by an Act of Parliament in 1982 and is involved in the mining of diamond, gold, and emeralds on behalf of government.

ZMDC has 100 percent shareholding in Marange Resources, and 50 percent in the other companies which mine diamonds at Chiadzwa.
