Man who stole workmate’s cellphone arrested in bus as he flees town

A MINE worker allegedly stole a cellphone from a fellow worker and fled to Bulawayo from Kamativi.

Appearing before  Hwange Ms Fungai Dzimiri was Nelson Phiri (19) of Ralon Mine Quarters in Kamativi where he was employed as a general hand, for stealing a workmate’s cellphone.

The complainant, Mr James Gwatiringa had left his phone charging when Phiri allegedly stole it and fled to Bulawayo.

He was however arrested in the bus before reaching the destination.

The cellphone handset was found in his possession.

The magistrate remanded Phiri in custody to Friday waiting for sentence as the State had to check for previous convictions against him.

Phiri was once convicted of two counts of theft in Nkulumane, Bulawayo where he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

Three months of the sentence was suspended for five years and a further nine months were suspended on condition that he restituted the complainant.

The remaining three months were commutted to 210 hours of community Service at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane.
