GWANDA Municipality has warned residents of a US$20 fine which will be charged for littering.

The local authority has intensified efforts to promote cleanliness in the mining town and restore its status as one of the cleanest towns in the country.

Gwanda Mayor, Clr Thulani Moyo said keeping the city clean requires the buy-in of all stakeholders. He said the hygienic state of the town is crucial to attracting investors.

“We have issued an anti littering notice where we have advised stakeholders and residents to keep and maintain their surroundings clean at all times. As a municipality we strive to guarantee every citizen the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well being.

“Any person found littering will be liable to a fine not less than US$20. Maintaining a clean environment is the responsibility of everyone and therefore we have to work together and not against each other,” he said.

Clr Moyo said the municipality is committed towards doing its fair share by ensuring improved refuse collection and providing enough bins in public places.

The municipality will launch the “Keep Gwanda Clean Campaign” on October 13 which seeks to promote cleanliness in the mining town. On the day the town will hold a massive clean up exercise. The campaign which seeks to reduce littering will see more bins being introduced in the town. It also seeks to augment the National Clean up Campaign. During the campaign council will also clear all illegal dumping areas that are sprouting around the town.

Clr Moyo was recently elected into office and said one of his areas of priority during his five year term is cleanliness of the town. He urged various stakeholders to assist in making the campaign a success by donating bins or providing vehicles for waste collection.
