Man won’t pay upkeep on prophet’s advice

A BULAWAYO man yesterday demanded paternity tests after a prophet told him his estranged girlfriend was having sexual relationships with four other men.

Nkosinathi Mpofu was dragged to the maintenance court by Sibusisiwe Ndlovu who claimed $65 in child support.

Mpofu pleaded with Magistrate Sithembiso Ncube to allow him to take the child for a paternity test.

“I’ve heard from a friend that this woman had a boyfriend during the time that we were together,” he said.

Ndlovu in her defence called Mpofu’s accusation a bluff.

“He didn’t hear from a friend but he consulted a prophet who told him I’m involved in four different relationships,” she said.

Mpofu told the court that he had a pregnant wife and could only offer $30 for the upkeep of his child while he raises money to go for paternity tests.

“I sell fire wood and live in a family house. My brother who lives in South Africa helps me with groceries,” he said.

Ndlovu alleged that Mpofu could afford the amount she wanted because he was the landlord and did part time building jobs.

Magistrate Ncube ruled that Mpofu should pay $40 for the upkeep of his child.

She said the paternity tests had to be done within six months, effective from September.
