ZIFA Southern Region chairman Musa Mandaza has mourned the death of South African football star Senzo Meyiwa who was gunned down by suspected robbers on Sunday evening. He was 27. The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was shot by unknown assailants at the home of his musician girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Spruitview, Vosloorus.
Mandaza said because of South Africa’s proximity to Bulawayo and cultural and historical ties, Orlando Pirates and Meyiwa enjoyed overwhelming support from the region.
“We’re as the Zifa Southern Region touched by the passing on of Meyiwa, one of the most outstanding footballers in South Africa. We’re close to South Africa and a lot of football people here support the South African football scene. We were used to watching him week in and week out in action and he was an inspiration to youngsters.
“We’re saddened by his death especially the tragic circumstances with which he met his death. At this hour of mourning we join our counterparts in South Africa in mourning the death of the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper,” said Mandaza.
Meyiwa had recently put in strong performances for South Africa in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in the absence of his injured adversary Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs.
The Pirates goalkeeper was a rare breed of talent having played for his country in all age groups.
