JOHANNESBURG — The provisional assessment of former president Nelson Mandela’s estate was about R46m, Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke said yesterday.
Mandela bequeathed R1,5m to the NRM Family Trust, in his will that was read out in Johannesburg.
He also left royalties to the trust of which a percentage would be given to the African National Congress.

Mandela bequeathed R50,000 each to a number of personal staff, including Zelda la Grange, his former personal assistant.
Other beneficiaries listed in the will that was read by Moseneke included his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He also left money to a number of schools and organisations.

Wits University, Qunu Secondary School and Orlando West High School in Soweto bequeathed R100,000 from the anti-apartheid icon.
Meanwhile, Mandela left nothing to his estranged wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, in his will, which was read in Johannesburg yesterday.

The only mention made of her, is as his “second wife”, with reference to his children Zenani Mandela-Dlamini and Zindzi Mandela, as well as their children.

Executor Dikgang Moseneke outlined a “provisional inventory” of R46m, excluding royalties and other amounts.
However, he cautioned the amount could change as the will is studied more carefully.

The document was drawn up in 2004, and provisions were updated in 2005 and 2008.
Mandela’s third wife, Graça Machel, is the main beneficiary of the will because their marriage was “in community of property” and she therefore has the right to half his estate, Moseneke said.

He said he is not aware of any challenges to the provisions of the will.
Earlier yesterday, Moseneke said, the will was read in its entirety to members of Mandela’s family.
“It went well,” he said. “There were clarifications sought from time to time.”

Last year, while Mandela’s health was in decline, his family was involved in a number of high-profile disputes. — Sapa-AP..
