Mandizidze clinches Eswatini league title

ZIMBABWE born fitness trainer Promise Mandizidze, has clinched the 2024/25 MTN Premier League of Eswatini title, ending a long barren spell for Zimbabweans in the mountainous kingdom.

This came after Nsingizini Hotspurs cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Sidwashini United at the refurbished Somhlolo National Stadium, sealing the championship ahead of fierce rivals, Royal Leopard.

Leopard, the former champions, needed Hotspurs to stumble but on a football feisty Sunday afternoon, their own 3-0 win over Green Mamba wasn’t enough to dethrone the new kings.

In the end, from a Zimbabwean perspective, it was Mandizidze, who emerged as the latest name on a proud list of local football luminaries to lift the league title, a list that includes, but is not limited to, Ephraim Mazarura, Talent Maphosa and Stanford Ncube.

And yet, it could have been double, if not triple delight, perhaps even a quadruple joy, had the trio of former coach Alex Sigion, Nyasha Chintuli and Junior Zindoga lasted the season.

Only last season, James Nguluve, now with FC Platinum, missed out on the title after being offloaded by eventual champions Mbabane Swallows, midway through the campaign.
