CAPS United coach Taurai Mangwiro has challenged his men to show their true character on Sunday, in a make-or-break Castle Lager Premiership tie against Highlanders, at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday. Makepekepe have a big chance of keeping their league championship campaign alive with victory over Bosso who thrashed them 0-4 when the two sides last met in a league match at Barbourfields in the reverse fixture.
Race leaders Dynamos have a tough away assignment against Buffaloes at Sakubva where they face the familiar threat posed by their former skipper, Moses Chunga, who is now in charge of the soldiers.
The last time CAPS United played at home, there were riots at the end of their match, a draw against How Mine, with disappointed fans venting their fury on Mangwiro and calling for his dismissal.
But a key 1-0 win over Black Rhinos at Rimuka, where Moses Muchenje converted a penalty, has cooled the tensions at the Green Machine and giving Mangwiro some breathing space.
CAPS United have also been impressive at the giant stadium, compared to Rufaro, and their players will feel they have a chance to beat a Bosso team that is just emerging from a period of turmoil in their camp that led to the departure of coach Kelvin Kaindu.
Mangwiro said they have a point to prove.
“Playing at home will not put us under any pressure as we need to show character, in times like these, and come up with the maximum points,” said Mangwiro.
“We have a point to prove and we have to continue to picking up points either at home or away and winning the championship is our objective and that is possible.”
Mangwiro said their destination was in their hands.
“We have the final say in our campaign and we will not read much about what is happening at our opponents as it is part of the game,” said Mangwiro.
“Every club will have some problems at some point so we will not take that as an advantage.
“Bosso are having their problems and we will not spend much of our time looking at what is transpiring in their camp but to work hard for results.
“We are in good shape and only two players are likely to miss out this weekend’s match as of now. We have (George) Nyirenda, who is out through suspension, and (Pervington) Zimunya who is attending some family issues.
“I hope by missing the two we are still able to land the championship and the match against Highlanders is of great importance and we are looking forward to a win.
“The game will determine how we will finish this season and I can foresee our win on Sunday as everyone is working hard to produce positive results.” Mark Mathe will be in charge of Highlanders on Sunday but is not new to battles against the Green Machine. He was in charge of CAPS United, with Kaindu attending to a coaching clinic in the United Kingdom, when Bosso faced CAPS United in the reverse encounter.
