Mantas dominates Astra Paints, Midlands Open

MUTARE-based Mantas Tennis Academy players gave a good account of themselves in the Astra Paint Open Tournament as well as the Midlands Open Tournament.By Wednesday, a number of Mantas players had secured their places in the Astra Paints Open finals which were set for Thursday (yesterday).

The Midlands Open was played last week.

Mantas Tennis Academy administrator, Vincent Nyatoti, confirmed that the academy dominated the just-ended Midlands Tennis Open Tournament with a good number of their players winning in both singles and doubles competitions.

“There are more than 100 players competing in this tournament (Astra Paints Open). They came from Harare, Bulawayo, Manicaland and Masvingo.

“Michael Happy and Aubrey Mupezeni are set for green ball finals, while Deborah Mhizha from Masvingo out maneuvered Beyonce Jani of Mutare Mantas in the green ball finals.

“In the girls’ Under-18 clashes, Beverly Matsiwe of Mantas will meet Tariro Dembo from Harare in the finals.
“This was as a result of Beverly’s victory against Tadiwa Chinamo in the semi-finals and Tariro’s victory against Rubo Mahachi in the other semi-finals match. In the U-18 boys, Mantas also dominated, with Michael Gutu set for final,” said Nyatoti.

He also said the academy had an outstanding performance during the just-ended Midlands Tennis Open Tournament, with a number of players from their stable winning in various age groups.

“The academy had players who competed in the U-10 green ball, where Tadiwa Mufiti beat Steve Tiyani. In the orange ball clash, Mantas player Beyonce Jani defeated Leen Paizha.

“The two teamed up for the doubles where they became runners-up though Jani was the overall winner of the category.

“Another Mantas Academy player, Annett Matumba was victorious against Tsitsi Mahere from Harare.  The two also teamed for the doubles match which they also won.

“Rudo Mahachi of Mantas won in U-16 finals and fellow Mantas player Michael Gutu also won in the U-18 finals.
