A MUTARE Teachers’ College final year student has approached the courts seeking maintenance from his lawfully wedded wife whom he accuses of not contributing towards their children’s upkeep.Jevas Mushava was claiming $250 for his two children and himself from his wife Melania Mberikwazvo.
Mberikwazvo is employed as a police officer and is stationed at Waterfalls Police Station in Harare.
Appearing before Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi, Mushava told the court that Mberikwazvo was not contributing anything towards the children’s needs.
“She has not been paying their school fees Your Worship. She has also not been paying rent for the rooms we rent at Birchenough Bridge where her brother is currently staying,” said Mushava.
Asked whether he was staying with the children or not, he answered: “The children are staying with their maternal grandmother and she has been struggling to raise their fees for quite some time.”
Mberikwazvo dismissed her husband’s story and said she had been paying for the children’s school fees.
“I have been paying school fees for both children. The main issue here is that he wants me transferred to Mutare. I am waiting for him to finish his college studies so that I will be stationed where he will be deployed,” he said.
Mushava brought his brother-in-law as a witness who told the court that Mberikwazvo was being economic with the truth.
“My sister has been having some financial difficulties Your Worship,” said Mberikwazvo’s brother.
The court ordered Mberikwazvo to pay $60 for the up-keep of their children with effect from September 30.
