While it has captured headlines and sparked global conversations, this cutting-edge technology raises significant legal, ethical, and societal questions that demand public attention. Here is what you need to know:
What is Manus AI?
“Manus,” the Latin word for “hand,” reflects the tool’s goal of turning thoughts into actions.
The developers describe Manus AI as a “general AI agent” capable of a wide range of autonomous tasks, including report writing, spreadsheet creation, data analysis, content generation, travel itinerary planning, and more.
It integrates with various external tools, such as web browsers and code editors, and boasts state-of-the-art performance in multiple benchmarks. Unlike some open-source AI systems, Manus AI is currently in closed beta and only accessible by invitation.
Despite comparisons with other AI models like DeepSeek, it is essential to highlight the differences.
DeepSeek-R1 is an open-source model aimed at general-purpose functions, while Manus AI is positioned as an autonomous agent with broader ambitions. Its multi-modal capabilities include processing text, images, and code.
Unsurprisingly, the launch has generated enormous interest online, though it has yet to influence global financial markets or trigger stock fluctuations similar to those seen with other high-profile AI launches.
The concerns over Manus AI’s origins
The controversy surrounding Manus AI stems in part from its origins.
While its privacy policy identifies Butterfly Effect PTE. LTD., based in Singapore, as the responsible legal entity, several reputable news outlets, including The South China Morning Post and Forbes, report that Manus AI was developed in China.
According to sources, its creators are based in Beijing and Wuhan, and the project is backed by Chinese investors.
The privacy policy, meanwhile, has come under fire for its AI-generated sections, which appear disjointed and out of place in a document meant to reassure users about data protection.
This ambiguity raises questions about Manus AI’s compliance with international privacy and security standards.
If its development and operation are tied to China, the application could be subject to Chinese laws on censorship and data transfers, similar to concerns raised about other Chinese AI projects like DeepSeek.
Such affiliations increase scrutiny from international regulators and may lead to restrictions, as seen in the EU and other countries.
Legal and ethical red flags
Manus AI markets itself as the first “truly autonomous agent,” capable of bridging the gap between conception and execution.
However, this ambition poses a significant ethical dilemma, as highlighted by leading researchers in the field.
