Manyuchi storms into top 50

ZIMBABWE’S boxing jewel Charles Manyuchi’s eighth round technical knockout win over Patrick Ollatey of Ghana in Zambia on Saturday has seen him leap to 46th in the world rankings among welterweight boxers.Manyuchi won the WBC International welterweight title at the Lusaka Government Complex at the weekend. He is also the Zimbabwe and African Boxing Union champion in the division.

According to the latest rankings released yesterday in influential boxing site Boxrec, he is now officially in the world’s top 50 welterweight boxers. Manyuchi who went into Saturday’s fight 93rd in the world, has given Zimbabwe a glimmer of hope that he could be the next biggest sporting hero in a list that includes Bruce Grobbelaar, Peter Ndlovu, Nick Price, Kirsty Coventry, Byron Black, Wayne Black, Cara Black, Benjani Mwaruwari, Mark McNulty, Tom Watson and Ngoni Makusha.

His 46th spot on the world scene means he can now attract bigger fights and purses.

Another Zimbabwean boxer Elvis Victor Moyo is ranked 155th in the world. He is the World Boxing Federation (Africa) champion.
