FORMER pupils at Manzvire Primary School in Chipinge have formed the Manzvire Primary Old Boys Association to help in developing the school.
Manzvire has been in existence for more than 70 years and thousands of pupils have passed through its gates over the years yet to date, the school yearns for a better tomorrow.
It is in light of that a group of former pupil decided to start an establishment that would usher a new era in the school’s life even when economic challenges buffet the school from many directions.
A Science teacher at Manzvire Secondary School, Mr Pumulani Dube, was elected president of MPOBA at a ceremony held on December 27, 2015 at Khosa Shop at Manzvire Township.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Dube, expressed delight at being elected and vowed to work with his executive to ensure that a modern primary school is established at the Manzvire School.
‘’I am greatly humbled to be elected as the president of MPOBA and wish to thank all those who felt I am useful in being a supportive partner of the school. We are not administrative. Far from it. We are complementing partners and we have the same aims of seeing the school grow by leaps and bounds. Membership is general, associate, affiliate and executive. In other words, we are leaving no-one behind in our efforts to build Manzvire Primary into a centre of excellence in everything,’’ he said.
The school has a grinding mill among the projects that it has to supplement the money that comes from the school fees. A member of the advisory board, Mr Tennyson Mlambo, a lecturer at ZEGU in Bindura said as former pupil who has gone on to be important members of the wider world, it was incumbent upon them to practise social responsibility programmes in an area they call home.
‘’As former pupils, it is critical to look at ourselves in the mirror and see whether we are walking the talk. They say charity begins at home. Some of us have gone on to become stars in various fields yet we fail to trace our routes to this school. Those accolades mean something when we become responsible members of this school. We may not have had access to the computers back then, but we can’t afford to see our brothers and sisters fail to access the Internet,’’ said Mr Mlambo.
MPOBA has a dream of bringing e-learning to the school which is in tandem with the new curriculum which emphasises Science, Maths and Technology education. Since education is multi-dimensional, the grouping wishes to nurture elite athletes and get quality academic results in line with other schools in the district.
Mr Dube said: ‘’We started by sourcing glazing materials, buying sports equipment and availing a sponsorship package for Munashe Njere who was on the verge of dropping out of school as he is an orphan.”
