JUST one point!
It’s what stands between Norman Mapeza and a fourth league title on the bounce.
Some will suggest one of the titles was won when he had already left to coach Chippa United of South Africa.
But, the reality is that the club had already passed the halfway mark of the campaign when he left and he qualified for the winners’ medal.
With a vastly superior goal difference (+34) compared to Dynamos (+18), it means Mapeza’s men will be champions if they pick a point in their next match.
It will take their points tally to 68 points, the maximum possible number of points DeMbare can get, if the Glamour Boys win their remaining four matches.
The champions are riding on a 17-match unbeaten run where they conceded five times.
They are also angling to keep the momentum in the Chibuku Super Cup, where they are again the natural favourites to win the title.
Until this point, they have been defeated three times by Bulawayo Chiefs Herentals and Ngezi Platinum, with a total of 11 goals coached.
Sadly, goals per season continue to dwindle each year, with Dynamos’ 2010 record of 79 goals remaining a cut above the rest.
FC Platinum have so far raked in 45 goals, but they are taking comfort from the fact that they have been steely in defence.
Mapeza, though, is not concerned about records, saying his eyes are fixated on winning the remaining matches.
“We are for aiming results in these finals matches just good results. That’s what we are playing for. I’m not worried about the margins; all I hope for is winning,” Mapeza said.
“Right now, there is pressure. Teams want to prove a point against us, so we are aiming at good results only.
“No need to be stylish in our approach. The final games are always tough and emotional.”
Goalkeeper Wallace Magalane has kept 14 clean sheets in 17 matches and is touted to claim the Goalkeeper of the Season award should he maintain the good run. – Sports Reporter/FARPost
