adminMaponga (32) was elected unopposed to fill the vacant post of ZUJ chairman during elections presided over by ZUJ national secretary general Mr Foster Dongozi.
Speaking after his election, Maponga promised to unite scribes in the province stressing that journalists in Masvingo could achieve a lot if they worked in unison.
Maponga also said he was going to initiate a number of projects for media practitioners in the province.
“My major objective is to unite scribes in the province. We have to put our heads together as journalists and pull in the same direction if we are to succeed. I have also lined up a number of projects which I think will change the socio-economic status of media practitioners in Masvingo,’’ Maponga said.
Meanwhile, Herald Beitbridge Bureau chief Thupeyo Muleya was elected secretary in the new Matabeleland South ZUJ executive.
Dongozi also co-ordinated the election which was attended by more than 10 journalists from the province.
Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Matabeleland South Bureau chief Sifiso Mpofu was elected chairperson.
Prior to the elections, there was no executive in the province as many journalists who were in the previous chapter left for other provinces and countries.
Speaking soon after the election Dongozi urged the executive to work as a team in addressing issues affecting media practitioners in the province.
“We need to work together as a team if all our programmes are to see the light of the day. Its high time journalists become innovative and plan for their future,” he said.
