Water situation in city improves

Acting director for Harare Water Engineer Simon Muserere said the pump had been repaired though final touches were under way to restore supply to other areas.

“We have worked hard the past week to ensure that we fixed the burst pump that was affecting the western suburbs. The pump is now functioning and the entire western suburbs will be receiving normal water supply,” said Eng Muserere.

He said they were doubling their efforts to ensure that water supplies in Greystone Park and Hatcliffe were restored before Friday. “A lot of people live in high density suburbs so we had to prioritise like we always do to avoid disease outbreaks,” said Eng Muserere.

Parts of Glen View, Budiriro, Highfield and Mufakose had for the past two weeks gone without water.

The continuous water challenges, Eng Muserere said, were as a result of ageing pumps at the water treatment plant. “Most of the water disruptions in Harare are as a result of the old pumps at our main treatment plant. Normally the economic lifespan of water pump is 20 years and those at Morton Jaffray are about 50 years old and that is the reason for the continued water bursts,” he said.

When The Herald visited parts of the western suburbs yesterday it was all smiles from the residents who were accessing water from their taps.

A Glenview 1 resident, Diana Nkomo, confirmed that water was restored on Monday evening.

She said she was tired of standing in long queues at the nearby borehole where everyone was accessing water.

“It was really frustrating to spend more than three hours in long queues to access water from the nearby borehole,” she said.
