Sources close to the England forward had indicated last week he was still training hard and keen to play for the Red Devils. However he now knows there is no way back at Old Trafford following Ruben Amorim’s comments after the win at Fulham.
And that leaves him with just six days to find a solution — or face spending the rest of the season in limbo at his boyhood club.
Rashford said on December 17 he felt it is time for a fresh challenge — but six weeks on there has been no movement and he has not played a game since.
It now looks highly unlikely he will feature again after Amorim said he is not being considered because of his performances in training.
The Portuguese boss even went on to say he would rather put 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital on the bench than a player who was not trying.
Yet those comments could now end up hitting United in the pocket when it comes to moving him on over the next few days.
If Rashford does not leave before Monday’s transfer deadline, he will cost United £6.5MILLION in wages until the summer window opens.
Clubs around Europe will now be hopeful they can land the 27-year-old forward on the cheap before the deadline.
And they will try to capitalise on the fact there looks to be no way of patching up the differences between the pair.
There was fresh interest shown from Turkey in the past couple of days — including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new club Besiktas. However, Rashford has also maintained he does not want to move there as he wants to force his way back into the England reckoning.
For the same reason, he has ruled out a switch to Saudi Arabia despite some tentative interest shown around New Year.
Barcelona would be his dream destination and there is some interest among the Nou Camp hierarchy about doing a deal.
However, money is tight for the Catalan giants and they need to offload players to create space for him.
Former Premier League duo Eric Garcia and Ansu Fati could make way for him but nothing has been finalised yet.
But his hopes of a move to AC Milan were scuppered by Three Lions team-mate Kyle Walker going there — as Italian league rules would not allow two from the UK in one season.
Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are other clubs who have shown interest while Tottenham are long-term admirers – but the clock is ticking for something to be worked out.
Despite Amorim’s comments, Rashford reported for training on Monday – the coach’s 40th birthday — along with other players who did not play a full game at Craven Cottage. —Sun.
