MARK Williams finished in 13th place after making his first cut at the Jo’burg Open in South Africa on Sunday. The Zimbabwean golfer had failed to progress to the final rounds in the previous years but finally found his touch at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington course.
Williams had rounds of 65, 70, 71 and 70 to tie with George Coetzee, Steven Ferreira, Felipe Aguilar, Stuart Manley, Trevor Fisher Junior, David Howell and Rhys West.
Williams pocketed R223 163 for his efforts.
He was the only Zimbabwean at the tournament.
South Africa’s Haydn Porteous won his first European Tour event after a bogey-free three-under-par final round of 69 powered him to the Joburg Open crown.
The 21-year-old triumphed by two shots on 18-under from compatriot Zander Lombard (71) with both securing a place at July’s British Open.
England’s Anthony Wall (72) also qualified for the British Open.
Wall had two bogeys and two birdies in his opening 10 holes before closing with eight successive pars to finish on 15-under-par.
With the top three in South Africa guaranteed a place at the Open, the 40-year-old qualified ahead of Sweden’s Bjork Akesson, American Daniel Im and South Africa’s Justin Walters.
Meanwhile, Scott Vincent won the right to compete on the lucrative Asian Tour in 2016 after he finished tied for second at the Asian Tour Qualifying School final stage at the Springfield Royal Country Club in Bangkok, Thailand, on Saturday.
