Market report: Economy needs tightening

IT is no secret that the economy is undergoing a difficult spell and there is a need for both business and the Government to tighten their belts to ensure we are back on the rails.

Most companies are struggling to remain above water with a majority failing to meet their obligations such as salaries and taxes on time. The situation is obviously being worsened by the shortage of money which has curtailed spending among the general public.

Meanwhile, the equities market railed again on Friday with the main Industrial Index closing 1,44 percent firmer at 105.21 points. The positive close was buoyed by gains in Delta up 3,08 percent to 67 cents. Econet went up 5 percent to 21 cents and Innscor up 2,56 percent to 26,41 cents. Old Mutual also continued with its good run closing the day 1,06 higher at 308,99 cents.

Turnover for the day amounted $607,00. Local investors are scrambling to buy shares ahead of the introduction of bond notes as well as the likely roll overs of Treasury Bills.
